1. Three images of mine were selected for the American Photography 25 "Tribute" Site (here's hoping they make this into a usable site, rather than the Photoshop Web site template abomination it is now).

2. Search Magazine published my China water pollution photo essay and story online and in print.

3. My photograph of SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro came out in BusinessWeek.

4. ... as did a photo from a enjoyable afternoon I spent with journalists Claire Shipman and Katty Kay at Kay's house. The two of them recently finished a book on finding a balance between home and professional life.

In February, I had the pleasure of covering the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) here in DC for the Guardian Weekend Magazine. These might be the best kind of assignments, when you're told to go to a place and "do what you do." Only a handful of images ended up running in the magazine, but in looking at images for a new portfolio, it was hard to pass up this series.

Having arrived in Washington, DC on June August (thanks Char) of 2005, it was hard to imagine that I'd ever be photographing Newt Gingrich. His rise and fall had wrapped up neatly over a decade ago and pulling off a second act in politics seemed unlikely. So count me surprised when I got a call one afternoon in the middle of March to photograph him at his office in DC where he has been making waves with his healthcare consulting company.

It seems almost redundant to bring up the tight time schedule he allowed us for shooting (first shot: 11:10:12AM, last shot: 11:16:09AM), but there it is. I decided to bring out the whole arsenal of lights, creating four different setups in the conference room I was given, and sketching out a cheat sheet of exposures and lens choices for each look to minimize down time.

In the end, it was a good, focusing experience with lots of time to prep for the shoot and I came away with a couple images that may show up in a portfolio soon.

ING Direct CEO Arkadi Kuhlman was a total blast to photograph and once the strobes started popping, it was all I could do to keep up with him. Here are a few more I liked, treading the line between my edit and out takes. arkadi kuhlman
